Facing the Invasive Parakeet
The rose-ringed parakeet may look charming, but in Waikele it’s a costly, noisy, and damaging invasive species—corroding mailboxes, spreading disease, displacing native birds, and multiplying into thousands. In my April 17, 2024 talk to the Waikele Community Association, I shared their biology, past control efforts, costs to homeowners, and why state leadership is crucial. Curious how pets became a public-health and property threat—and what homeowners can do now? Read the full update to see how Waikele is tackling the parakeet problem.
